In the story, alchemy occupy a lot of places in the society. Where it can be use for the military or medical purpose. Alchemy is the studying of understanding, decomposing, and reconstructing the structure of a matter.It follows the laws of equivalent trade where you must present something of equal value to gain something of that value. One of such example is turning of lead into gold by following the 3 steps using alchemy. People who practice alchemy are called alchemist.
The story follows 2 alchemist brothers, Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric in a country, Amestris . They are searching for a legendary stone or catalysts , a Philosopher Stone where they can ignore the laws of equivalent trade and enhances their alchemy when using it. They wanted to use it to recover their lost body. They tried to perform human transmutation on their mother in order to revive her which is is taboo in alchemy. As a result, Alphonse lost his entire body and Edward lost a leg. In order to save alphonse, Edward sacrifice a arm to place Al soul into a armour.
Edward was replace with artificial arm and leg called automails by their childhood friend, Winry. A few days later, a state alchemist visited them and proposed that edward to become a state alchemist where they can be assessed to a unlimited information and funds to find a way to recover their body. Edward then becomes a state alchemist and set on a journey with his brother to search for the legendary philosopher stone.
Becoming a state alchemist also means becoming the dog of the military. state alchemist also have the infamous reputation of wiping out the whole of Ishbalan race. Along the journey, they meet different characters, this includes the survivors of the Ishbalan race that would seek revenge on state alchemist and a group of people call homuculus. They are artificial human with pieces of philosopher inside them with super regeneration power. They also learnt the truth of their father that left them long ago and also the truth behind the truth of the philosopher stone and the motive behind the actions of the military.
*This is the general plot of fullmetal alchemist and fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. They have more or less the same plot however some parts may differ. This is strictly base on opinions.
Like i say, fullmetal alchemist and fullmetal alchemist brotherhood are not the continuation of each other. They are the same series with different settings and some changes in the story. However, they have more or less the same plot. Well, if you want to see the changes clearer, it will be best if you watched the 2 series. The differences between the 2 series are such as the introduction of new characters, Arrangement of story, changing of characters, Swapping of characters name, different enemy and different settings.
If i have to choose between the 2 series on which is better, i would choose fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. Okay, i have my reasons for saying so.
1. Comparing with fullmetal alchemist, brotherhood is much less draggy. Even though it has more episodes, however, it has more fightings,epic scenes. The whole story quickly moves on to the main plot and also with very little flash backs which i think is very good.
2. The graphics is much more nicer. Even though it is the same series , but i think it has different producers. Brotherhood is presented by eclipse. In my opinion, eclipse presents anime with one the best graphics such as clannad that is also presented by eclipse which has the best graphics i seen so far.
3. The ending of fullmetal alchemist totally distort the story as compared to the ending of brotherhood. I should say the ending of fullmetal alchemist is really kind of unexpected which i think is good but to me the ending is not satisfying and kind of incomplete which totally threw the watcher off. Not that it is not good, i just think that the ending is not solid enough as compared to the ending of brotherhood which provides a better, more complete and satisfying ending.
4. Lastly is that the important characters are neglected in fullmetal alchemist as compared to brotherhood. Some important characters such the father of ed and al in the story, i feel he is really being neglected in fullmetal alchemist. The appearance is so little, it totally makes him like a side characters. Whereas in brotherhood, his appearance is a lot more which in terms allow us to understand the relationship between the characters better.
Of course there is also some minor flaws in brotherhood which i dont think is really significant. I will just state it down anyway.
1. Firstly, although i mentioned that the series is not draggy, i still find the episodes way too long which is very far off from fullmetal alchemist.
The main characters has very interaction with some side characters that has important roles in the story.
Now lets move on to the introduction of the songs. Okay, there is sure a lot of songs in each series. So i will only introduce my favourites.

Okay, overall Fullmetal alchemist as a whole is really nice and awesome. For people who like a lot of fightings and at the same time funny, this is definitely the anime for you. I strongly suggest people to watch both series so you can see the difference better and judge for yourself. Not that fullmetal alchemist is not nice, it is still great, just that brotherhood is better. If you are are going to see fullmetal alchemis, the movie is a must watch as the movie is the ending for the series. For people who do not have enough time, i recommend that watching fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is enough :DD Thats all for now, ciao su~~~
